Welcome to Desmond’s barber shop – a family business that doubles as the hub of the community’s social scene. It’s a friendly place where you can eat, drink, watch videos, play dominoes and, if you’re lucky, even get a haircut. Norman Beaton stars as Desmond Ambrose, a self-taught barber who only knows one hairstyle. Born in Guyana, he dreams of going back there to retire – unlike his enterprising wife, Shirley. She has successfully crossed the cultural divide with the aid of their three children. Rounding out the cast are West Indian loafer, Porkpie; streetwise wheeler-dealer, Lee; trendy hairstylist Tony (Dominic Keating who played Lt. Malcolm Reed on Star Trek: Enterprise) and the African student, Matthew, who bears the brunt of many jokes around the shop. Devoted fans around the globe embraced these vibrant characters as part of their extended family and shared in the laughter and sense of belonging. |
